My (Belated) Avalon High by Meg Cabot Book Review on Goodreads

Avalon HighAvalon High by Meg Cabot

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Romace, history, YA lovers beware. This book will have you turning from page to page eagerly and with mounting excitement.

ME LIKEE GOOD BOOK:

This book sent tingles down your spine that were unmistakable. The melding of modern day with legend was enthralling and beautiful. i simply couldn't really figure out what to do but READ. The history was what drew me to this book. I mean I love magical coincidences and running gags, as mentioned in my review of Reincarnation, so this book had it all. King Arthur/Camelot (one of my obsessions): check. People who are reincarnations of the people on the legend of King Arthur: check. Cute guy who is really a medieval king: check. What more to love? I think what really ruined it for me was seeing the less factual and less making-sense movie. Which brings me to my dislikes:

WHY I SOMEHOW DID NOT LIKE THIS BOOK (IF THAT'S EVEN POSSIBLE):

Watching this movie first really spoiled it for me. The ending was so different that I somehow found myself not liking it...I want to love it so wholey and completely I could marry it, but I...can't. I don't know why I'm so hesitant about it. I think the end felt a bit rushed, maybe not plausible/feasible. In fact, a lot of the events in the story felt off for me(again, probably mostly because they did not happen in the movie). I think that overall the story was a bit...well, weird. But the history and lore...oh I could swoon. That was the cincher for me.

I am still confused about my feelings for this book (as I often find myself saying at the end of a lot of my reviews). I loved it, and yet I didn't. It was perfect, yet lacking. This is all the result of my watching the movie before reading the book. Then maybe I'd have felt like I do about The City of Ember books and movie. The movie added more depth and story to the book. But, no I had to go and see the movie first . Grrrr me. I hate it when it's my fault stuff sucks. My take-away: DO NOT SEE THE MOVIE BEFORE YOU READ THE BOOK. Must remember for when I read The Hunger Games and see the movie.
