My Good Job, Kanani by Lisa Yee Book Review on Goodreads

Good Job Kanani (American Girl of the Year 2011 Book 2)Good Job Kanani by Lisa Yee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just finished reading this book today. I'm finally up-to-date on my reviews. Yipee!

Okay, so book 2. Not as good as book 1. I didn't find as much of the Hawaiian charm that I loved so much from the first book. And I didn't really like the friendship struggle between Kanani and Celina. American Girl books don't usually have that much separation between friends in their books. I thought that Kannani's fear of surfing was a bit unrealistic because she hadn't really tried very hard in the first place. As I read, I thought it was kind of weird how Kanani didn't really try to find Jinx, and it wasn't constantly her angst. Not as well written or exciting/interesting as the first. I find this is a common theme with the second Girl of the Year books. This is why I think they shoud have kept it at one.

The only reason I rated this book 5 stars was because I just love American Girl. And it was so sweet and unrealistically perfect (as usuaal). :)

My (Belated) Aloha, Kanani by Lisa Yee Book Review on Goodreads

Aloha Kanani (American Girl of the Year 2011 Book 1)Aloha Kanani by Lisa Yee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kanani is a kind Haiwaiian girl who desperately wishes to make friends with her visiting cousin from New York. Kanani is such a sweet, open-hearted girl. The cultural references in this book really help the story and characters feel authentic. Whenever they talk about something Haiwaiian it makes me want to guy somewhere foreign (preferably Hawaii) and try new foods and have cultural experiences. I just thought that Kanani's tory was very sweet. Thought the plot was anything but intriguing, I was mostly reading for the experience of seeing what Kanani's life was like and the cultural exposure.

My (Belated) McKenna by Mary Casanova Book Review on Goodreads

McKenna (American Girl Today)McKenna by Mary Casanova

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am quite a few years older than McKenna, yet I could relate immensely to her story. When I was her age, and younger, I did gymnastics, too. I loved her telling of her days there, and thought there was just enough of that in book. I could also relate to her stories with homework, staying up late to finish an assignment, using classical music to focus, trying hard to make school work, persevering, etc. I also liked her breathing gray sky credo a lot. I used it at school and at home. I tell myself to stay focused like McKenna! I loved her character so much, she's one of my favorite Girl of the Year's now. I loved her to no end, and this book was amazing. I finished it in a little over an hour.
