Fifties Chix: Travel to Tomorrow by Angela Sage Larsen Review
Travel to Tomorrow by Angela Sage LarsenMy rating: 2 of 5 stars
I thought that this book was going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I love time travel books and whatnot, so I thought that I would just fall in love with this story.
Not so. This book was just okay. The plot wasn't phenomenal, it was actually pretty boring. It was hard to keep track of the intimate details of the five girls' separate lives and not confuse them. The characters were genrally pretty boring, and the historical aspect wans't very inriguing. I mean, the plot just lacked a lot. Very slow-paced, and it never really picked up or became interesting.
I didn't hate it, I mean I could get some enjoyment out of it, it just was onlt decent. Overall, there really isn't much to say about this book besides the fact that it was lacking a good storyline.
Read it if you want to try it for yoursef. Maybe you'll like it a little more than I did. I started it in April, but got sidetracked because of how boring this was. I only picked it back up again on August 9th. Glad I'm finally just done with it.

Nowhere by Marysue Hobika Review
Nowhere by Marysue G. HobikaMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
*I received this ebook from the author in exchange for a review*
Nowhere truly impressed me. I was struck by how different and yet similar this book was to her other, The Perfect Prom Date. I must say, I was instantly hooked with the characters and setting from the first page.
Nowhere is a delightful romance about two people who need each other desperately, but don't realize it until the moment they meet. Once they do, it is clear that they are the others' true love. <3 The premise of the story is every girl's dream: The rugged country boy meets girl from out of town and it's love at first sight. *swoon* I've always wanted this to happen to me but reading about it is the next best thing, I guess!
*WARNING 1: The order in which I bring things up will be in a really weird order because I wrote out all my thoughts in a note, in a completely random order, so I'm just kind of writing them out here in that order.
WARNING 2: Quotes may contain spoilers that are not contained within HTML*
GOOD/LIKES:
I have always liked books about changing lifestyles or moves. So when I started this book out and read she was moving cross country from the city to the country, I was already starting to imagine in my mind any number of plots.
I liked how Mike was so angry and dead-set against moving to Nowhere. It made the story more interesting and hooked you faster. It also made it all the more better when (view spoiler)[ she finally started to like it there and her change of heart resulted (from James!) (hide spoiler)] However, at the beginning her snotty and snarky attitude got annoying. I personally am not one of those people who holds an attitude against a character if they have a good reason. Mike had a good reason: her dad had died, she was going to have a fun and dream-fulfilling senior year, and now she is moving to the middle of nowhere on the other side of the country along with her b****y sister. Yeah, I would be pretty pissed if I was her, and acting WAY worse.
Another reason I really liked this book was the country life and the simplicity of sentence structure and words the author used when talking about/describing it that made the country setting really come out. I've always loved the country, so I, in turn, loved this book's simple country life, happy moments, and good times.
Some quote examples of the simple, flowing writing about country life or just the simplistic relationship between Mike and James and Mike's grandpa:
1. “You look good, Pops.” I smiled. It was true; he seemed younger than he did that first day. We quickly finished everything on our plates. “That tasted awesome,” I declared. “It sure did. Thanks for asking me to join you young folk.” Pops’ eyes were bright with appreciation. “You’re welcome,” James and I said in unison, making us all laugh.”

2. “Once inside, we raided the fridge. Finding ground beef, I quickly turned it into burgers. James went out to the garden and picked a zucchini and yellow squash to add to the grill. There was nothing better than a cookout.
Pops was in the living room, watching baseball. I poked my head in. “Hey, Pops, James and I are making dinner.”

(view spoiler)[ It might strike you as something weird to like, but I enjoyed Mike's aloofness and disgust with Tyler's friends. I take that same attitude with guys when they're obviously creeps or idiots. Some call it harsh, I call it giving them what they deserve. ;) So I very much agreed with Mike on this. I have been in the situation of being in a new town with your cousins' friends a lot, mainly when I'm on vacation and the teens all go off. A lot of the time the people are really stupid and weird (Casey and Tyler come to mind?) so I was just loving Mike's attitude, because she's exactly like me. =D (hide spoiler)] I really admire how she is very assured about who she is and what she values and does.
Mike is a very strong character with a lot of depth and she is pretty relatable. I was very surprised about her complexity because Josie in The Perfect Prom Date was not very complex or had depth and was kind of one level. I think the nickname Mike fits her because it has a tomboy-ish ring to it. Once you read the book, it will just fit her character/personality in your mind.
James. Nice. Well-mannered. Good values. Smart. Strong. Mature. Kind-hearted. I could go on and on . He is a wonderful love interest for the story. Every girl reader will be drooling over James. Definitely another awesome main character in this story with a lot of depth and complexity to him. ;) And I, like Mike, refuse to call him Dooner. What a ridiculous name. James is much, much better. I just wish it would say James instead of DOONER at the top of the chapter for the perspective.
As for Tyler and his friends, they're a bunch of raucous jerks and the girls are a bunch of bimbos. I thought it was interesting that Tyler was a jerk and the arrogant football star. Normally an author writes about how nice the family is or the family will be stereotypical and complacent but it's a new twist to have the cousin in the goody-goody small town be the bad boy jerk on the football team. I liked that unexpected take on the character. Tyler is spoiled, arrogant, rude, and entitled.
Emma is a total popular b****. At least that's what I thought at first. Over time, you see she's not that bad. She is definitely nicer than Ellie in The Perfect Prom Date. Emma is a cheerleader, friends with the biggest slum *cough cough* (I think you know what I'm getting at) in school.
James' parents. I don't even know where to start. Let me just talk about them as a couple first. I find it interesting how the author actually brings in the element of James' parents when they were younger, and mostly talks about them in terms of their mistakes when they were younger. She doesn't just refer to them as "parents", you know, the ones without a past like in every book. Now onto each individually. James' mom is really a nice woman. I feel bad for her. She's a popular girl who has aged and now suffers the consequences of a fab high school life. She would always defend James' dad because he is, after all, her husband. However, she is not a bad person at all, means well, and loves James a lot. Now, now, now, onto James' dad . Of all of the low down alcoholics. He is a classic example of an alcoholic, scoundrel, abusive father. He is so horrible. I mean, I can't say he's evil. I'm sure, deep down, he means well, he is just so misguided after all of his alcoholism that he is a terrible person now. Like his wife, he is suffering the consequences of being a popular, carefree, "YOLO" if you will, guy in high school. Being the Tyler of his time. Just from his attitude at the beginning I instantly knew that (view spoiler)[ he wasn't going to like James' relationship with Mike (hide spoiler)] He just has a super weird values system. I feel bad that James' mom had to give up the rest of her life, and now James' dad blames her for it. Like she had a choice in getting pregnant. I have a feeling he pressured her into it anyway. And then he claims she "tricked him". Creep. As you can see, I am quite disgusted by his behavior.
Mike's Grandpa, Mr. Jenkins, A.K.A. Pops or Pop-Pops. He is such a nice guy! He's a great matchmaker too! ;) ;) (If you know what I'm saying.) Although I prefer my own grandpa (I'm lucky that way), I would still like to have Pops as an uncle or something. I'm glad that Mike, her mom, and Emma coming has helped Pops. I hate when elderly people's health deteriorates because their relatives won't help them.
In this book, the author writes different takes on familial positions, e.g. Emma, James' parents, Tyler....
(view spoiler)[ When Emma kind of gets between Emma and James for a little while, I felt like my heart had been torn out and thrown on the ground, then stomped on. I reeeeeeeeeeeally didn't want Emma to get between Mike and James. I breathed such a big sigh of relief when that was quickly mended. (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ The deal that Tyler tries to blackmail James into agreeing to was beginning to make me cry as I saw all of the destruction to their relationship coming...and then James talked him out of the blackmail. And I was like, "PHEW." I was certain I just wouldn't be able to stand this. More on this later under the BAD section below. (hide spoiler)]
The author writes some of the prettiest, best quotes and lets us look into Mike's mind, thoughts, and personality the most when she writes about what Mike is thinking while she's drawing.
Examples:
1. "I didn’t think while I drew. The pencil flew across the page making marks, almost as if it had a mind of its own. Often times I didn’t know what it was going to be until it was completed. The cemetery was still with only a few birds calling off in the distance from time to time. When I finished I was not at all surprised by what had taken form on my paper. It was a portrait of my dad. He was sitting behind the tombstone, using it as a desk, his laptop open in front of him. He wore a peaceful smile. I smiled, too, as another tear fell.”

-On top of the fact that this is an amazing, beautiful, heartfelt, wonderfully written quote, I just LOVE it. I recommend reading this quote when coping with death.
2. “I concentrated on his eyes and his facial expression. Those said a lot about a person. I’d noticed that his eyes changed color based on his mood. Right now they were a true clear green, which meant he was happy. When his eyes turned cloudy with a mix of gray, he was angry. But my favorite shade was clear dark green, the color of his eyes when he’d just kissed me. Eyes only told part of the story. Drawing a portrait could be like looking at a person’s soul, when done right.”

-How romantic! *swoon*
The two perspectives that the story was told from made the plot development really interesting. When it's such a small town, you get two completely different perspectives on all of the characters (as well as sometimes three or four perspectives, e.g. (view spoiler)[ how James' dad knew Mike's mom as "[Mr. Jenkins'] rich daughter, Sarah" which was yet another perspective on her (hide spoiler)].
I really loved the cute, simple, understated, loving repartee between James and Mike. It was well written and really represented their peaceful love. <3 This example is kind of more just about the very simple writing at first. It's not really that great of an example, but it's the best I got right now.
Examples:
1. “The place was jamming for a Sunday afternoon. We waited to sit down, hanging out on the outdoor patio, watching the motorcycles come and go. Finally we were called and the hostess led us to a table inside. The smell of barbecue made my mouth water.
“What do you usually order?” Mikalya asked me while poring over the menu.
“I have lots of favorites. Sometimes I get the pulled pork sandwich, the beef brisket, or the ribs.”
“I love ribs. Do you want to get the sweetheart deal for two? It says it comes with a full rack of ribs and four sides to share. You can pick two sides that you like and I can pick two that I like.”
“Sounds great.”

I love how Mike defends herself against Tyler and won't take crap from him. She puts him in his place. This reminds me of what I do with my guy cousins every single time they can get a bit...controlling like they have control over me just because I'm their girl cousin. Mike just tells it like it is with no restraints. I can connect with Mike in this way.
Something I really love about James is how he is better than his dad. His dad is like the bully and James proves that he won't sink to his dad's level and that he is better than his dad. I find that really admirable. It just proves how mature James is. ;)
Example:
“Then a calm came over me as I realized I no longer cared what my dad thought. “You’re a pathetic drunk,” I stated, shrugging. I turned to leave. I took half a step when I was yanked roughly back by my shirt. I spun around and faced him.
“Just where do you think you’re going, Jimmy?”
“I don’t know yet, but anywhere’s better than here.”
“You’re not going anywhere.” My dad shook his head.
“You can’t stop me.” I was bigger than my dad and I had been for a while now.
“Sure I can.” My dad lifted his hand and punched me hard in the gut.
I didn’t flinch. I’d anticipated he’d try something like that. It wasn’t the first time my dad had used force. Only difference was I wasn’t ten years old anymore. I suspected it hurt him more than it had hurt me. He rubbed his knuckles. “Let’s see what you got, boy,” he taunted.
“I’m not going to fight you,” I said. I refused to be like him.
“You’re a pussy,” he slurred.
“No. You’re just not worth it.” His eyes took on a dangerous look. His face contorted with rage.”

This might be sort of off-topic, but The Perfect Prom Date and Nowhere both have two sisters in high school, and the main character is an upperclassmen and the younger sister is an underclass men who is popular and snotty. She can sometimes be a bully to the main character. I just think it's interesting how the characters between the two novels were similar, however they were in completely different plots and the main characters were different in terms of personality.
This is sort of off-topic too, but I'm a giant history nerd, so the thing about the graveyard next to the farm having all of her ancestors there would be so cool! I would just die if I could live there. I would probably end up going to the graveyard every day. I believe you can get a kind of peace by trying to learn more about your ancestors and grow closer to them. I know I have.
The cover. Now, that is not at all what Old Faithful looks like, but I'll overlook that. Mike is so pretty and meets my standards. Now James...that's not really how I pictured him but at least he's not ugly. *shrugs shoulders*
BAD/DISLIKES:
However, even though I would not like this to happen, the author made a conflict but quickly resolved it. For instance, (view spoiler)[ Emma getting between Mike and James, the blackmail that Tyler tried....Tyler would not have backed down so quickly. (hide spoiler)] I could see the conflict and the reader crying their eyes out as it began to unfold and then *record scratches* it stops and everything is all right. I'm starting to think the author has a hard time writing conflicts, especially after reading The Perfect Prom Date. Maybe just because she read a lot of books where the conflict is so hard to deal with and not just scream at the characters (Hunger Games, anyone?). I mean I'm not saying that I love conflict. It just helps the story.
It was mentioned that James has a sister:
“It wasn’t a secret that my parents got married because my mom was pregnant with my older sister.”
Excerpt From: Marysue G. Hobika. “Nowhere.” MuseItUp Publishing, 2012-06-08. iBooks. This material may be protected by copyright.
What I'm wondering is...what happened to her? This doesn't exactly qualify as bad , but I kind of thought it was weird how she was only mentioned once in the story. I wonder what James' dad did to her....
The story kind of ended abruptly. I was like, "Wait, that's it?!" I mean, once I adjusted to that I was like, "Oh...okay." But it just felt sort of...cut off and short. (view spoiler)[ Mainly because there was like this crazy major event in the plot that happened a couple pages before the end and then I was like, "What...? I thought we would learn more about the consequences of Mike almost dying. :/" (hide spoiler)]
OVERALL:
This was a great YA romance that I enjoyed immensely. I would recommend it to lovers of sweet YA romances and country/small town books. I would like to thank the author for giving this book to me, because it was a very good read.

That Summer by Sarah Dessen (Belated) Review
That Summer by Sarah DessenMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Many of my friends on Goodreads didn't like this book, and it's because they just don't get it. I can connect with Haven completely and I felt her pain about all of the issues in her life. This book, if you can relate, was so sad and made me cry. It was just really painful for some people who can relate. I'm not going to go into detail, but if you think you might like it then read a little, if you don't start to connect, then dump it. I loved this book in a different way than the others I've loved. It meant something to me, and it helped me. I'll never forget what That Summer meant to me. It was a wonderful book.

Beautiful Creatures Review
Beautiful Creatures by Kami GarciaMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
I don't even know where to start. WHERE TO FREAKING EVEN START?
My mind has officially been blown. WOW.
Some things I did while reading this book:
1. I sobbed.
2. I gasped.
3. I laughed.
4. I also at times didn't make a sound and just read. And read. And read. I would get home from school and read 100 pages and do my homework afterwards for like three days.
Now, well, I used to get so excited by something I read that I would just start skipping words and look for exciting parts. However, I have broken that habit and only fall back into it when a book just gets me so excited, hooks me so incredibly that I can't hold myself back. The Harry Potter series has done that for me, and so has this book.
After that spazz session, here's some things I really liked about this book:
1. The flashbacks in time.
Being a GIANT history nerd, a steamy, forbidden romance combined with historical aspects/reoccurrences throughout history just drove me crazy. It was everything I could have asked for in a book. If that made any sense at all.
2. Gatlin
Gatlin was a really interesting setting. Everything from its history, to its people made for an awesome town. If this book had been set anywhere else, it probably would be getting a two-star review. It is just so essential to the plot.
3. The romance
*SOBS IN HYSTERIA* Ethan and Lena. Their love was so real . And it made it five times better that (view spoiler)[ their ancestors were in love. It makes them like reincarnations of them! (hide spoiler)] Their connection (literally) was so destined and fated and raw...*mouth gaping and moving around*
When a book just blows me away like this, when it is just so stupendous, spectacular, amazing, wonderful, awesome, cool, magnificent, marvelous, splendid, lovely, breath-taking, PERFECT as this...my reviews end up being a lot of mindless fan-girling and obsessive crazy OMG-ing. I would say more but all I can say is WOW . How do you know if you should read it then? YOU SHOULD. YES YES YES YES YES YES PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS BOOK PLACE IT ON HOLD AT YOUR LIBRARY WHATEVER IT TAKES JUST PLEASE!!!!!!!!
And if you're a history and YA fan like me, well...
YOU WILL PROBABLY DIE WHEN YOU READ THIS BOOK.
So please, pick it up right now.
Overall thoughts:
This book just flowed together so perfectly. There is no way to describe what this book did to me. I was sitting in the middle of Staples in an office chair waiting for the rest of my family to buy some things and I was crying my eyes out, whimpering, and laughing like a maniac. Let's just say I got more than a few weird glares. Note to self: Never read a climax anywhere other than the privacy of your own home.
It's really quite sad. Every single time I read a book this good, I always tell myself I will give it a worthy review. And every single time, I end up spazz-ing in it and it's really just a load of mindless crap. So sorry for this freaky review. It's really all I am capable of doing.
There are no words that are really poignant enough to describe this book. JUST READ IT.

The Perfect Prom Date by Marysue Hobika Review
The Perfect Prom Date by Marysue G. HobikaMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I got this as an ebook for free thanks to the 1000 Members Giveaway on The YA Book Club (http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/7...). Anyways, this was probably the first giveaway I have ever won, so I was quite excited! Let's move on to the actual book now shall we?
GOOD:
I thought that this book was REALLY SWEET . I just loved the romance in it, because Josie and Brennan truly loved each other and cared so much about the other! There were so many moments when Brennan did something so sweet I couldn't even stand it! Brennan is the perfect boyfriend, and he will have you feeling like you're the love of his life from when you first meet him. Brennan is really cute, and you can just tell that they are the PERFECT couple. ;)
Josie is definitely a good main character. Though she could have used more depth (more on that later) I truly enjoyed her as a person and her quirks. I definitely felt like she was my best friend while I was reading it. She is a grounded, nice, well-rounded person. She is very mature, which is an admirable quality in a character in a romance novel. She gets good grades but isn't a super freak about school, is on the swim team, and is very well-behaved. I liked Josie from page one.
I think that this book definitely gives you a lot of good dating advice and just girl tips in general, although I think that the 10-step plan might have been a little far-fetched....
Brennan's family is really nice and I wish I knew a family like them. They always made me smile. And Brennan's little sister...AH.DOR.ABLE . I just kept saying, "Awwwwwww......." Maybe read the book just to hear about his sweet four-year-old sister?!
This is totally off topic but it was definitely a major score for me: I am one of the biggest Just Dance fans on the planet so to have (view spoiler)[ the main character and Brennan play Just Dance 3 in their awesome ultimate teen hang out? (hide spoiler)] I practically had a spazz attack on my couch (plus Just Dance 3 is the first one I ever played and still my favorite of all of the games)!
I think the only thing that kept the romance in this book from being super stupid was the maturity of the characters. It made their romance real and beautiful, not cheesy and teenaged "love".
BAD:
However, I had a few issues with the book that were kind of annoying.
Three words: MORE. PLOT. DEPTH. This book had no conflict for the longest time. I was worried there was never going to be one! I mean sure there was her b**** sister that tormented her, but that wasn't really a large part of the plot. I mean for the most part everything went smoothly for 3/4 of the book. Which brings me to my next point.
A lot of this book was really glaringly unrealistic. I'm not one of those people who reads a book and goes, "That could never happen!" but I still had a problem with it. It is romance YA fiction, not fantasy. There was a lot of instances where I just couldn't help but roll my eyes. Also, there were some problems with stuff being illogical or just not making any sense.
Examples: (view spoiler)[
Instance 1: One of Josie's ten steps is to surprise her guy. So she decides to surprise him in two ways. Both times, Brennan says something about what a nice surprise it is. Literally. He uses the word surprise . I just couldn't help but feel that part was a bit cheesy. I mean, come on. If you are planning to surprise a guy, his reaction isn't going to be perfect or go exactly as planned. He's not going to respond by going, "What a nice surprise!"
Instance 2:
Josie has this awesome ultimate teen hangout underneath her house that is like this expanded basement with a movie theater, a pool table, and a TV and videogames. Literally the perfect set-up for a date. This just annoyed me because I would have liked a more realistic date. Then there's the fact that Josie's parents had just met Brennan when they let him and Josie go down there for hours alone, unsupervised. I don't think any parent would really allow that.
Instance 3: One of Josie's ten steps is to pretend to be interested in another guy for a while. She feels really guilty about it and thinks it's a bad idea, but she could never stray from the holy Ten Commandments steps to her perfect date. So she goes through with it anyway. Brennan was being completely faithful and then right before she was about to pretend to be interested in another guy he said, "I only love you." As in, HE COULD NEVER LOVE ANYONE ELSE. If I was her, you know what I would have done? Given up my stupid bullheaded plan and listened!!!! Brennan was being so faithful you'd have to be a COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOT to do what she did. This step turned out to not really help her, although it didn't harm her relationship either. Still, in real life she would have totally lost Brennan. (hide spoiler)]
Instance 4: Brennan put up with a lot of crap from Josie, which was really unrealistic because no guy would put up with the way Josie was at times!
Instance 5: Brennan's family was too perfect. They were too "classic suburban big family.". Also, the siblings all got along perfectly, which really made no sense. I can understand getting along for the most part, some families are like that, but they were literally all like best friends.
Instance 6: Josie and Ellie's relationship. I can understand sisters strongly disliking each other (my sister and I are like that) but the extremes to which it is taken in this book is really out there. They HATE each other. Their relationship is basically that of the most popular girl in school (Ellie) bullying the less popular but pretty and nice girl she's jealous of (Josie). I think having Ellie be that much of a b**** and that evil just didn't really make sense. She is a sophomore, so she is capable of being that evil, but it just didn't make sense. Ellie is her younger sister, not her older. Injust didn't understand why she had so much power over Josie. I know some girls who could totally be Ellie, I just think it might have been easier to understand the hate if the author had elaborated on Ellie's character more. Ellie literally fits the definition of a b****to a T, the author really knew what one of those girls acts like. Because Ellie was it.
Sometimes this book felt like a fantasy, which was kind of weird too read. Basically, my main point is that at least for half of the book, there wasn't any major flaw in Josie's life or conflict in the plot at all. I mean, besides Ellie's b****ness.
Josie was often quite blinded by her plan. It blocked her vision to what was happening in her relationship. She probably could have made going to prom with Brennan a lot smoother if she had just revised some of the steps to her plan that maybe weren't very smart or not necessary now that she was at a certain point in her relationship with Brennan.
One thing I didn't understand was how (view spoiler)[ Josie was so scared of Brennan finding out about Everything Prom and then how she reacted when he did. I mean, why is a scrapbook about prom embarrassing? It's not like it was her diary! I wouldn't have minded at all! I'm sure lots of girls make scrapbooks with pics of dresses. I mean, what other way is there to organize what you like? I think that this was just a plot tool used by the author, because it just didn't make that much sense why she was so horrified. I can understand embarrassment, but her reaction was completely overdramatic. No bueno. I kept rolling my eyes when I read the part where Brennan goes to find where she went after fleeing from the halls in humiliation. (hide spoiler)]
Josie describes herself as having medium popularity. She says that she hasn't ever really been super popular with guys, and that she isn't good with clothes. Then suddenly, as soon as she begins to put her plan into action, she speaks like a seasoned pro about flirting, dating, boys, clothes, fashion, everything! I was like, "Whoa, back up a sec. She knows this how?" It just didn't make much sense. The fact that she just came up with this brilliant plan out of the blue, that just fell from the sky and landed in her brain, just made no sense.
(view spoiler)[ It was really obvious that they would be crowned Prom King and Queen, but I guess that can't really be helped. (hide spoiler)]
A fair amount of spelling and grammar mistakes but I don't mind those really. Just figured I should note that.
OVERALL:
By now you are probably thinking, "Well it sure seems like she should give this book two stars." However, I really did enjoy the book for all of its problems, so I am giving it three stars. It's a light, fun read that is only 0.99 cents on the iBookstore, so if you have some free time, buy it and give it a chance. There is a small plot twist at the end, which felt a bit weird, but was interesting. The plot depth got better towards the end, so that was nice.
I can't say that the title didn't warn me: The PERFECT Prom Date. As in, this book will be a bit too perfect at times and you will have to deal with it.
My final words-
I enjoyed this book and thought it was a sweet romance that just needs some work on the plot. The author needs to revise it a bit is all. Still a "good" read. ;)
